2025, into the finish chute
What it’s all about !
2025 …. What a year ! Let’s hit up a few highlights.
Short Course racing had quite the domination this year. With WT World Championships being on our doorstep in Wollongong, a large contingent of athletes did the “qualification tour” roaming the country gaining points to get on the team. This culminated in 21 HPT athletes take the start line at our home World Champs in races ranging from Sprint, to Standard to Aquabike and onto the final day of Mixed Team Relays.
Long Course racing had a great showing as always but. this year had a slightly different focus. With 70.3 Worlds in Spain, Men’s Ironman Worlds in Nice and Women’s Ironman Worlds in Kona, qualification wasn’t on top of our list. Nonetheless we had plenty of athletes putting in big preps and having great races.
Running seemed to make a shift forward this year too. We had a big showing across all the usual winter races including all the usual half mara’s as well as the big one, Sydney Marathon. Ultra running had a big place this year and will continue to develop as we welcome more athletes with a strong run focus.
Mixed preps was one of the biggest things I noticed this year. Western Sydney into Sydney Mara, into Short Course Worlds and then onto a mix of bike races, runs and even Hyrox. I am super proud the way we handled this using the core principles of stay fit, manage load and stay healthy.
Training continues to be the dominant theme in what we do of course. With athletes completing anywhere from 250 to 600 sessions over the year it’s something you want to get right. With a blend of hard work, consistency, and having as much variety as we can manage to achieve our goals.
Testing became a bigger part of our world this year. We had a nice shift towards establishing a strong set of testing protocols and linking our results of those to our racing. This will continue further into 2026 and get even better.
Looking into the future is a big part of any coaching program of course and making sure your training methods stay relevant to the way the world is moving forward is key. AI has been the bringer of some great opportunities in this area this year. Having the ability to access information is key of course but having the experience and granular understanding of the athlete themselves and their individual context to know what is good and bad, is an area HPT will continue to explore and be leaders in. Stand-by for some detailed ways you and HPT can use this brave new world.
Community and Culture. All of this stuff we do is done by real people living real lives of course and to that HPT will always have as it’s priority culture and community. To experience the joy of a great session or race is one that should be shared and our aim is to make sure that happens in an environment of inclusion. Any chance we get to be encouraging and supportive we will grab with both hands and run with it. One of our team’s proudest moments this year has been getting around one of our team that is going through a really tough health challenge.
A huge thank you to every single one of you that has been a part of what we have done this year. Thank you for your loyalty to all the long term athletes, and a big welcome to the newcomers. YOU are what makes HPT what it is. A world leading endurance sports team.
On behalf of the whole coaching team I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and look forward to kicking some massive goals with you all in 2026!
