Cold

Cairns :

It’s getting cold - Discipline needs to be up and we need to be organised and motivated to get out the door. Success doesn’t fall in our laps unfortunately.

A few “success” tips

  • be organised. make it easy to get to sessions. gear in one spot. know the session.

  • have training in your phone calendar with all the other things. prioritise your training in the context of your life of course but focus on just making smart decisions based from your values.

  • have warm gear. wear a wetsuit in the pool if its a deal breaker between swimming and not swimming. don’t listen to the “softie” calls you will get from your mates. …. you do you.

Milestone Achievement - I’ve been included in the Coaching Staff for the Australian Team to go to the Commonwealth Games. You have to celebrate your wins as a coach but also be grateful.

  • My family and friends - They always believe in me and support me to be a coach which can be a very demanding profession at times.

  • My athletes - I always worry about my athletes if I have to go away for a week but they never fail to support me and encourage me. That’s very humbling.

  • My colleagues - I have a great network of coaches and various other professionals in my life. They help me with advice, perspective and motivation when things get hard.

I had a week off - That was great and I managed to stay mostly off the computer apart from 30min checking in on athlete sessions each day. Coaches aren’t great with taking a break and that’s dumb. To be your best you have to use recovery just like your athletes to avoid burnout.

I had a bike fit - great experience and my first specific fit. We moved my cleats forward, my seat forward and my bars up. Thanks to Dan at Shimano for a great job. I appreciate it.

  • I have an arthritic right knee from a full ACL tear many years ago. That plays out as lack of ROM and adds a unique challenge when doing a fit.

  • Right side ROM challenges have a flow on effect on how I sit on the seat to get my leg over the top of the pedal stroke.

  • I am unbalanced in power application at ~ 60% left / 40% right. Probably stuck with that it seems.

  • I tried 165 crank length but didn’t like it and settled at my current 170’s. Concept was sound but didn’t “feel right” and actually made my imbalance even worse.

  • My cleats were 1cm too far forward. not sure how I stuffed that one up but having them in the right spot now should help I am sure

One Pagers - Something new to me but I am finding it great creating a one page document dedicated to a specific topic.

  • One page limits me to the most important points and stops me from un-necessary thoughts - helping me focus on what matters.

  • It’s easy to share as a pdf or screen shot

  • I have trialled them on “athlete strategy” with success. Helps the athlete see what’s in my mind. That’s important. Ask me for one. I am keen to develop this.

  • Training Peaks doesn’t deliver in the “big picture” aspect so this could help

  • I currently have one each on testing, lactate and training zones. Will continue to expand my library. Added together they might make a good book one day.

Cheers
