Bunch Riding

Riding in a bunch can be one of the best parts of training for our sport. It can also be one of the most frustrating as well as dangerous parts if it isn’t done well.

The following slides should help you not only ride in a HPT bunch, but any bunch.

Training in a group is about compromise to achieve a great outcome.

The riders on the front should hold a steady, even, agreed pace. The riders at the back need to keep “on that pace”.

Communicate positively but not too loudly. Point and / or call out hazards that matter.

If you are riding the first part of the ride in the dark before sunrise you MUST have lights or do not ride.

Carry spares and enough nutrition and hydration for the whole ride.

You must be able to change a tyre and be confident to ride home on your own. If you don’t feel confident to ride home alone grab a mate to be your riding partner.

As a general guide there will be 3 different group ride paces.

Advanced level - 32-34kph average

Intermediate level - 28-30kph average

Base level - 24-26kph average
