Simple Hard Work

Another Monday, and as I sit here writing up our team’s experiences from the last 7 days I get a great feeling. Yes we had races. Yes we had training. Yes we had fun. Yes we missed some sessions. Yes we nailed a LOT of sessions. We experienced it all.

The life of an endurance athlete is meant to be simple. We get up each morning and get our training done. It’s a life of hard work and that’s where the magic happens. In life we get rewarded for hard work. Some races and some sessions remind us we are slipping off. Some races and some sessions remind us we have progress.

I LOVE endurance sport. It’s been in my life for 35 years. As an athlete and now as a coach. It brings out the best in people. It challenges us and helps us grow as individuals. Of course, doing it in a team makes it even better.

Race Reports

This weekend we had 3 races. A sprint in Newcastle. A 70.3 in Melbourne and a Clubbie in The Gong.

In Melbourne we had Jade Coleman backing up from a strong showing at Western Sydney. Jade swam well, wasn’t that happy with his bike and then went on to his “best run he has done in a tri for a long time”. Jade went 4:48 and is a happy athlete ready for his next challenge.

Sam Judd also did Melbourne 70.3 and was a happy athlete too. After being challenged with injury for the past couple of years prior to his time at HPT he was ready to go (albeit cautiously on the run). Sam has poured a massive amount of work into his rebuild being guided by gun Physiotherapist Brad Beer evey step of the way and has been under my run guidance for about a month or so now being back to full health. Sam knocked it out of the park with a 5:08 and a huge confidence boost.

Up in Newcastle Dan Inglese and Chris Jovcevski got confronted with a race that we will call “interesting”. A run in the middle of a swim. A multi-looped bike course with no-passing zones. Then a challenging run off. The lads took it on but and grabbed some points for Worlds qualification. Dan went 1:26 and Jova went 1:19. Well done lads ! Resilient stuff :)

Last up in the races, Matty Jean wanted a race and luckily he had a local club race happening. Matt just did it rolling through his final build week and came 2nd overall. Good fun and then rolled into a long run that afternoon.

Christmas Week Training

I always love athletes to have a week away from following a schedule and the week between Christmas and New Year is a great chance to do that. But i remain flexible. If you want a basic structure I will provide it. You just have to let me know.

If you don’t want a “plan” just enjoy getting out and doing ocean swims, MTB rides, trail runs, meeting mates for a ride and a coffee. Or even just having a few days away from training. Because that works too. As you head into a New Year it’s always a good idea to mix it up a little before you get back into the hard, structured work.
